30 years on Midlands Community College upholds the ideals of its founder by adhering to the mission statement.
The Midlands Community College, situated in Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is a non-profit educational centre, founded in 1981 by local resident and activist Mrs Pauline Greene. She was motivated by her philosophy that education provides a path out of poverty and that everyone should have access to quality education. Through the support of friends and community members, land was donated in the centre of Nottingham Road. The then Barclays Bank provided seed funding for the construction of the first blocks of classrooms and offices. The legacy left by Mrs Greene has grown into a flourishing educational centre with both residential and outreach programmes and an annual reach of approximately 2500 beneficiaries in the Early Childhood Development sector and 6000 youth in the maths, science and technology sector. Members are drawn from local government, community structures, the education sector and local business. The College has a staff compliment of over 60 people, including, permanent, part-time, contract as well as volunteers. Midlands Community College is a registered Non-Profit Company situated in Nottingham Road, uMngeni Local Municipality, uMgungundlovu District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal. The College provides education and skills development opportunities to disadvantaged South Africans. Second place for the talent show went to our SRC president, Brandon, who delivered a beautiful poem. We also had a trashion show, where our students show cased fashion made from trash. We were ABSOLUTELY blown away by all the creativity. Despite facing an ever-increasing need for the services that the College provides, we have reached the limits of our physical capacity. A master plan and business plan have been developed to guide future expansion. The proposed new college campus would more than double the teaching and accommodation capacity. It will also entail the upgrade and modernisation of existing infrastructure. Detailed design documentation, elemental estimates, geotechnical investigation, topographical survey, existing buildings and infrastructure audits were all undertaken by a professional team to ensure that a realistic project value could be determined. The project was presented to the uMngeni Local Municipality and was subsequently adopted for inclusion in the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP). The proposed expansion has also been recognised by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) as a Catalytic Business Venture.
